Mission and History

The mission of the Western Maine Community Chorus is:

to continue the long-standing tradition of choral music in Farmington, Maine

to enrich the community and its singers,

and to provide two concerts per year for the community.

History of Western Maine Community Chorus

The Western Maine Community Chorus (WMCC), founded in 2025 and formerly known as the UMF Community Chorus, continues the tradition of featuring a blend of traditional and contemporary choral music that reflects the spirit and diversity of our community.

Paul McGovern, Conductor, and Christina Spurling, Accompanist, are WMCC's first music staff.  When the chorus was founded in the 1970s under the auspices of the University of Maine at Farmington, conductors over the years included Joel Hayden, Steven Pane, Phil Carlson, and Ethan Wright.  Accompanists included Patricia Hayden and Susan Downs.

Many members of the current WMCC Board of Directors are credited with sustaining the ensemble through the rapid creation of WMCC as a self-sustaining, non-profit organization. The chorus did not miss a single concert in the process and looks forward to providing choral music in western Maine for decades to come.
